Sambhaji Brigade Wikipedia

Sambhaji Brigade is a Maratha outfit, based in Maharashtra, India. It is a branch of the Maratha Seva Sangh. The Brigade is named after the Maratha king Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj son of the first Maratha king Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.

Known for its controversial and often violent agitations, it gained exposure after its members attacked, vandalised and ransacked the Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute in Pune, claiming that it helped American scholar James Laine’s book on Shivaji titled Shivaji: Hindu King in Islamic India, certain parts of which were unacceptable to them. During this attack on BORI, they destroyed many precious and rare manuscripts which laid to decades of research to waste.

Sambhaji Brigade demands reservation for the Maratha community and wants inclusion of Marathas in Other Backward Classes (OBC) category. They also demand free education for Maratha children and registered marriages instead of religious ceremonies. The organization has been described as having an anti-Brahmin caste stand and has been repeatedly criticized for its extremist views.

Sambhaji Brigade Shiva Dharma

The Maratha Seva Sangh, founded by Khedekar, has been demanding reservations for the Maratha community and is also supporting creation of a new religion of its own called ‘Shiva Dharma’.

Sambhaji Brigade Leadership

Purushottam Khedekar is one of the founders of this organisation. He is also a prominent leader in the Maratha Seva Sangh, a related organisation and co-founder of Shiva Dharma. Khedekar has written several hateful and anti-Brahmin propaganda books like Bhatta Cha Kardhankal (a book with virulently anti-Brahmin propaganda) and Maharaj Mala Maaf Kara (Translates as “Your Majesty, I ask for your forgiveness”. This book abused 17th century Marathi Hindu saint Samarth Ramdas. Pune Police issued an arrest warrant against Khedekar for inciting anti-Brahmin feelings and causing caste discrimination. In 2015 he submitted an affidavit in the court and apologized unconditionally for his remarks on Brahmin women.

Shiv Sena: Why was Sambhaji Brigade formed? How does it work?

On January 5, 2004, a mob suddenly came and attacked the internationally renowned Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute in Pune. In this attack, the building of the institute was badly damaged. Rare books and manuscripts were also destroyed.

Then the discussion started as to who did the ruckus… From there the name of the organization Sambhaji Brigade came into discussion all over Maharashtra.

On the second day of the attack, the then Home Minister of Maharashtra R. R. Patil reached the spot and strongly condemned the attack. There were reactions from all levels regarding this incident.

The Sambhaji Brigade later said that this attack was deliberate. 72 people of Sambhaji Brigade involved in this attack were further arrested. After 14 years in 2017, 68 people in this case were acquitted due to lack of strong evidence. Four accused died during the hearing.

The attack was sparked by objections in the book ‘Shivaji: Hindu King in Islamic India’ written by American writer James Lane. The Sambhaji Brigade was accused of writing offensive articles about Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and Rajmata Jijau. After this incident, the state government further banned this book in Maharashtra.

The reason why the attack on the Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute a decade and a half ago is remembered now is that MNS President Raj Thackeray mentioned the organization in his speech in Thane.

Earlier, the activists of Sambhaji Brigade hurled insults at senior journalist Girish Kuber at a literature meeting held in Nashik. Even at that time, the writing about Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj is the same.

Why did Sambhaji Brigade hurled insults at Girish Kubera?

It so happened that Sambhaji Brigade activists threw ink on veteran journalist Girish Kuber at the Akhil Bharatiya Marathi Literary Conference held in Nashik. The Sambhaji Brigade is accused of defaming Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj in the book ‘Renaissance State: The Unwritten Story of Making of Maharashtra’ written by Girish Kuber.

After the incident of pelting in Nashik, there were various reactions from the political and social spheres of Maharashtra. Some supported the act, some opposed it. On this occasion, the discussion of the organization Sambhaji Brigade, which committed the act of slapping, has also started again.

The Sambhaji Brigade, which came into the limelight mainly after the attack on the Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute in Pune after the James Lane case, later protested on various issues and remained at the center of debate.

We are going to know all the information about the Sambhaji Brigade including who exactly established the Sambhaji Brigade, what is their purpose, who is leading the Sambhaji Brigade now.

Although the Sambhaji Brigade came into the limelight mainly after the January 2004 attack on the Bhandarkar Institute, the organization itself dates back a decade. The seeds of the Sambhaji Brigade are the seeds of the formation of the Maratha Seva Sangh, which was established in 1990.

Who established the Sambhaji Brigade?

Purushottam Khedekar founded this Maratha Seva Sangh in Akola on September 1, 1990. Purushottam Khedekar, a native of Buldana district, was then working as an executive engineer in the Public Works Department. The main objective of the formation of the Maratha Seva Sangh was to bring the government officials of the Maratha-Kunbi community on a platform to form their organization and to enlighten the society.

Later Maratha Seva Sangh started more than 30 departments. Talking to BBC Marathi about this, Purushottam Khedekar said, “When I founded the Maratha Seva Sangh in 1990, I had a total of 17 prominent activists like Nirmal Kumar Deshmukh, Amrita Rao Sawant with me. The organization which started with a limited purpose took a big shape.”

Maratha Seva Sangh started 32 to 33 divisions within a few years of its establishment. Among them, Jijau Brigade for women and Sambhaji Brigade for youth remained at the center of discussion.

Purushottam Khedekar says that Sambhaji Brigade was established after 1991. However, he also admits that the Sambhaji Brigade came into the limelight after the attack on the Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute.

We have already learned about the attack on Bhandarkar Sanstha at the beginning of this news. However, this single incident was made through the Sambhaji Brigade, there is no such thing. Even after that, several incidents took place, due to which the Sambhaji Brigade remained in controversy and the organization continued to be criticized.

After the attack on Bhandarkar Sanstha, controversy started over Dadoji Konddev.

Claiming that Dadoji Konddev was not Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s guru, Maratha organizations and Nationalist Congress demanded that the state government award given in the name of Dadoji Konddev should be cancelled, and the mention of Dadoji Konddev should be withdrawn from the successive textbooks. Sambhaji Brigade was in the forefront.

Praveen Gaikwad

The government also appointed a committee in this case. Based on the report of this committee, the mention of Dadoji Konddev was removed from successive textbooks. Also, the award given in the name of Dadoji Konddev was also cancelled.

After that, in the year 2010, the dispute heated up again in the case of Dadoji Konddev. Then in December 2010, the statue of Dadoji Konddev was removed from Lal Mahal.

Then in 2012, the Sambhaji Brigade broke the mausoleum of the tiger dog at Raigad and threw the statue of the dog into the valley. Sambhaji Brigade activists attacked the statue of the tiger dog. It was and is the Sambhaji Brigade saying that this was not Shivaji Maharaj’s dog.

Then the demonstration of the Sambhaji Brigade in the past few years to be discussed is the demolition of the statue of writer Ram Ganesh Gadkari in the Sambhaji Udyan in Pune in January 2017 and thrown into the Mutha River. The Sambhaji Brigade has alleged that Ram Ganesh Gadkari defamed Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj through his plays.

Babasaheb Purandare’s history of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj has always been on the target of the Sambhaji Brigade. He also opposed giving Maharashtra Bhushan Award to Babasaheb Purandre. There was also an incident of spitting on them.

On the whole, the Sambhaji Brigade has registered many aggressive protests due to the accusation of offensive writings related to Rajmata Jijau, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj.

come h. Salunkhe, Hon. m. Deshmukh, Purushottam Khedekar have also disseminated and propagated the books of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj or later history by Sambhaji Brigade.

However, Sambhaji Brigade office bearer Amol Kate says, “Sambhaji Brigade has never given up on ideological counter-argument. We have done it before and are still doing it. In fact, I myself went to Loksatta’s office and sent a letter to Girish Kuber. However, there is no response to the ideological counter-argument. What will you do then?”

One more thing to be mentioned here is that the Sambhaji Brigade which cast aspersions on Girish Kuber is no longer under the leadership of Purushottam Khedekar.

How about two ‘Sambaji Brigades’?

In 2016, the Sambhaji Brigade associated with the Maratha Seva Sangh decided to actively enter the political circle. On 30 November 2016, Sambhaji Brigade, a branch of Maratha Seva Sangh, declared itself as a political party. The then Sambhaji Brigade President Manoj Akhre became the party chief and Purushottam Khedekar’s son Saurabh Khedekar became the General Secretary.

However, Sambhaji Brigade office bearer Amol Kate says, Sambhaji Brigade was a social organization and it spread on the same lines. Because of this, many people were opposed to the political party, and from that, two groups, the party and the social organization, were formed.

The Sambhaji Brigade’s entry into politics was also opposed by office-bearers like Praveen Gaikwad, who had long worked with the Maratha Seva Sangh and Purushottam Khedekar, and continued a separate group as a social organization called ‘Maratha Seva Sangh – Sambhaji Brigade’.

Praveen Gaikwad was the Sambhaji Brigade under the authority of the Maratha Seva Sangh, and was its president for five years. And Manoj Akhre, who founded the Sambhaji Brigade party in 2016, was then an associate of Praveen Gaikwad, who later became the President of the Sambhaji Brigade.

Praveen Gaikwad also joined the Farmers Workers Party and later the Congress during this period. However, he did not contest the election from anywhere. Praveen Gaikwad’s name was being discussed for the 2019 Lok Sabha elections from Pune. However, he was not nominated by Congress. It was also discussed that Gaikwad is upset.

However, Praveen Gaikwad continued the work of the Sambhaji Brigade despite his political entry or defection.

It must be mentioned here that the activists who hurled insults at Girish Kuber belong to the Sambhaji Brigade, which defected from the Maratha Seva Sangh in 2016 under the leadership of Praveen Gaikwad.

However, the ideologies of Maratha Seva Sangh and Sambhaji Brigade are similar on many issues even today. That is why Purushottam Khedekar of Maratha Seva Sangh has supported the slur on Girish Kubera while talking to BBC Marathi.

If the Sambhaji Brigade is aggressive, why is it getting support?

Raj Kandalkar, who closely studied the progress of Maratha Seva Sangh and Sambhaji Brigade as a journalist, discussed this with BBC Marathi.

Says journalist Raj Kandalkar, “You may disagree about the agenda of the Sambhaji Brigade, but you have to understand the psyche of the youth they mobilized.”

“The youth of the Maratha community who own two to five acres of land, are fed up with obstacles to education, and are jobless ‘Nahi Re’ class farmers feel this organization is theirs. The organization like Maratha Seva Sangh or Sambhaji Brigade appeals to those ‘Nahi Re’ youth to fight like Shiv Raya. Almost done,” says Raj Kandalkar.

Another important thing here is that the Sambhaji Brigade led by Praveen Gaikwad has not only motivated the youth, but has also started training these youth in entrepreneurship in the last few years.

Especially, the ‘Business Conference 2021’ held in Pune through the concept of Praveen Gaikwad can be seen as a fresh example of this. Sambhaji Brigade has started this to financially stabilize the grassroot workers of Sambhaji Brigade.

Praveen Gaikwad has turned these activists towards entrepreneurship by saying ‘Ahad Australia Tahd Canada, Avgha Mulukh Apula’ not only by feeding on sentiment, but also to stand on their own feet,” Sambhaji Brigade office bearer Sachin Desai told
